Congratulations on 40 years of service, Cyrilla!

Cyrilla Face is celebrating an impressive forty years of service to the UW-Stout University Library.  Cyrilla joined the library staff in January 1976 and has continually served the needs of campus students, staff, and faculty.

Cyrilla started her career working in Technical Service receiving all monographs and paying the acquisitions invoices. Other positions Cyrilla has held include Ordering, Receiving, Film Preview, Cataloging DLC titles and Thesis. She also served as a temporary supervisor of the classified staff in Technical Services while the permanent supervisor took a leave of absence to complete her Master’s Degree.  Today, Cyrilla is responsible for processing the orders for monographs and audiovisual materials from the publishers and handling the invoices for these orders.

From manual typewriters, electric erasers, and a Xerox machine that kept catching fire to the computers used today, the technology at the library has changed dramatically throughout the last forty years. In 1976 the computer system consisted of five IBM cards that created a set of printouts which allowed the library staff to track books and keep a record of expenditures by department.  Later that year the library purchased an Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) computer which made searching for cataloging records easier and more efficient.  Cyrilla also recalls going through various transitions of computer formats over the years which include floppy discs, hard drives, the web, and e-mail.

One of Cyrilla’s favorite moments working at the library was when the library was named after Robert Swanson.  Cyrilla greatly admired Chancellor Swanson for his integrity and intelligence and was glad it was acknowledged with the dedication of the Robert S. Swanson Library. Other favorite memories include attending planning sessions for the construction of the current library in 1978 and having the University Library honored with the Wisconsin Library of the Year award in 1983.

Cyrilla’s favorite part of working at the University Library is the supportive work environment created by the staff and student assistants.

Latest issue of Check This Out now available!

The September/October 2016 issue of Check This Out is now available. Featured in this issue: library resources, how to get help from a librarian, and Banned Books Week.

Banned Books Week Webinar and Discussion

According to the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, each year there are hundreds of attempts by individuals and groups to have books removed, or banned, from libraries and schools. Reasons for attempting to ban a book usually center around a viewpoint or situation that the challenger finds offensive, such as drug or alcohol use, sexually explicit content, profanity, witchcraft, homosexuality, violence, or alternative political viewpoints. The ALA launched Banned Books Week in 1982 to raise awareness of the issues surrounding censorship and these challenges, and to celebrate a core value of librarianship - that individuals should have the freedom to read what they wish.

To commemorate Banned Books Week, the University Library has teamed up with the Center for Applied Ethics to host a webinar showing of Before the Mud Flies: Conversations for Banned Books Week from 12:00-1:00 p.m on September 26th.  Following the webinar, Dr. Tim Shiell, professor in UW-Stout's English and Philosophy department, will lead a discussion of 1st Amendment Rights from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The campus community is invited to bring a lunch and attend these events. The library will provide coffee and tea.

Hey Stout! #CheckThisOut - Texacano Cabbage

Do you have a cabbage you want to use and you want to try something new?

Check out The Cabbage Cookbook by Ann L. Haslinger on the 3rd Floor.
Call number TX803 .C3 H37 (The cover is plain green so no photo necessary)

The Texacano Cabbage recipe on page 18 is very good. I didn't know cabbage could taste this way.

I don't like green peppers so these were omitted and I used habanero jack cheese instead of cheddar to really give it some kick.

You cook down the chopped cabbage. In another pan you saute the onion and pepper in butter then add tomatoes and spices. Pour the cabbage into a greased casserole dish, then the tomato onion mixture over the top and finish it off with the grated cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

If you have more of a sweet tooth, I'd love to hear how the Quick Cabbage Strudel or Kraut Chocolate Cake recipes turn out (pages 148 and 149).

Meet the Staff: Technical Services

Technical Services staff work behind the scenes to make sure you can find and access the information you need in the library. They order, renew, process and add books, videos, magazines, newspapers and more to the collection.  Without their efficient work, the daily newspaper wouldn’t make it to the shelf, the book you asked to be purchased would never come in and things would be shelved willy-nilly; and how would you find a thing?

Acquisitions Assistant

Cyrilla is responsible for processing the orders and invoices for books, movies and music that get added to the physical collection.

Cyrilla has a B.S. in English Education with a minor in Library Science from UW-Platteville.  She started working at the library on January 5, 1976. In her time outside the library, she enjoys reading, photography, gardening and traveling.

Cataloging Assistant

Rachel maintains bibliographic records for library collections and manages the processing of library
materials.

She has her MLIS from University of Wisconsin-Madison and BA in History and French from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. And when not working, she is busy biking, reading, learning Norwegian, and spending time with family.

Rachel has recently joined the library team on November 30, 2015.

Collection Development Assistant

Padraig is responsible for ordering, receiving and invoicing serials (magazines, journals, newspapers).

He has an MA in Philosophy from Colorado State University. And in his free time he enjoys cycling, camping, hiking, reading and writing.

Padraig just joined the team on May 23rd. Welcome!

Hey Stout! #CheckThisOut - Strawberry Pie

The library has shelves of cookbooks, so Reference Librarian, Ann Vogl, decided to check one out in order to make strawberry pie. There were several to choose from, but she chose a simple recipe from:

Country Pies: A Seasonal Sampler by Lisa Yockelson. Located on the 3rd floor TX773 .Y63 1988.

The Glazed Strawberry Pie recipe is on page 112 and it was super simple. Only 4 ingredients – strawberries, lemon juice, sugar and cornstarch for the filling.

Ann took the easy way out and used a refrigerator crust, but there is a pie crust recipe in the book as well. The pie filling was easy to make. Crush two cups of strawberries and mix with lemon juice. Mix the sugar and cornstarch, then fold into the crushed berries. Cook on the stove until thickened. Let this cool to room temperature and fold into the small whole berries and then pour into a cooled crust. The only baking was for the crust, so the house didn’t get too warm. (You'll need to check out the book to get the full recipe).

The pie was put in the refrigerator overnight and served at room temperature the next day with whipped cream, if so desired. Ann shared with the rest of the staff and people thought it was quite tasty.

You could probably use part of the recipe to make strawberry jam.

Come in and Check Out a cookbook and share a review with us.

Enjoy your retirement, Kathy!

Kathy Winters will retire on January 29, 2016 after 19 years of service at the UW-Stout University Library. Kathy joined the library staff in January 1997 and has continually served the needs of campus students, staff and faculty.

As the Standing Orders/Electronic Resources Guru, Kathy works behind the scenes to make sure you all have access to the electronic resources in the library – article databases, e-books, streaming videos.

Kathy started out her career at the UW-Stout Library while she was a student. In her classes she noticed a need for scanned handouts instead of paper copies. She took this idea and ran with it; creating a scanning service for faculty. She would scan their handouts and readings so they could be housed in the course management system. It grew to include scanning for disability services.

Kathy’s service was recognized in 2014, when she received the Barnard Outstanding Service Award.

Kathy Winters is a great colleague to library staff, and mentor to the students she supervised. We will miss her sense of humor, fun-loving spirit and willingness to lend a hand.
