Feature Stream: Xmas Without China

"Exploring the intersection of consumerism and immigration in American culture, XMAS WITHOUT CHINA is an intimate portrait of families wrestling with our drive to consume cheap products, but also with our desire for human connection and a sense of who we are in a fast-changing world.

Pride and mischief inspire Chinese immigrant Tom Xia to challenge the Americans in his Southern California suburb to celebrate Christmas without any Chinese products. With deep ties to his extended family back home, Tom is incensed by how he considers China is misunderstood, particularly by the American media. But he gets more than he bargains for when he meets the Joneses, a young family trying to keep their children safe as a wave of Chinese toy recalls forces them to have their son tested for lead poisoning."

Feature Stream: Santa's Workshop

"Santa's Workshop takes you to the real world of China’s toy factories. Low labor costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment. Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages and dangerous workplaces. Those who protest or try to organize trade unions risk imprisonment. The Swedish buyers blame bad conditions on the Chinese suppliers. But they say that increasingly hard competition gives them no option. Who should we believe? And what can you do to bring about a fairer and more humane toy trade?"

Feature Stream: Dolores

"Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century - and she continues the fight to this day, at 87. Feature Stream: Earth Days

"This program traces the origins of the modern environmental movement through the eyes of nine Americans who propelled the movement from its beginnings in the 1950s to its moment of triumph in 1970 with the original Earth Day and to its status as a major political force in America. Drawing heavily on eyewitness testimony and a wealth of never before seen archival footage, Director Robert Stone examines the revolutionary achievements - and missed opportunities - of a decade of groundbreaking activism. The result is both a poetic meditation on man's complex relationship with nature and a probing analysis of past responses to environmental crisis."

"Cameron James is a new student at Padua High School, where he immediately falls in love with the beautiful Bianca Stratford. When he tells his new friend, Michael Eckman, about his crush, Michael informs Cameron that the Stratford sisters are notorious for not being allowed to date. Bianca's older sister, Katarina (Kat) Stratford, is a rebellious and argumentative feminist whom most people at the school describe as a "heinous bitch."

Cameron poses as a French tutor to get closer to Bianca, who tells Cameron that she is only allowed to date once Kat starts dating. Cameron and Michael hatch a plan to pay somebody to take out Kat so that Cameron can take out Bianca. They decide on Patrick Verona, an older, intimidating, and mysterious senior who was rumored to have served time in prison. In order to get the money to pay Patrick, Cameron and Michael convince the affluent and self-absorbed school pretty boy, Joey Donner, that he can take out Bianca if he gives them the money for their plan."

Susan Lindahl Wins University Library Barnard Award 2023

Susan Lindahl is this year’s recipient of the UW-Stout University Library Barnard Outstanding Service Award. Susan has worked for the University Library for 17 years, serving in many different roles. Currently she is the Library’s Assistant Director, Access Services Manager, Cataloger, Copyright Officer, and Building Manager. Nominators described Susan as being “student focused”, “an advocate for library spaces” including securing new carpet for the first floor, “an important leader on the issue of book challenges in the community of Menomonie”, and “a quiet but effective leader and advocate for the library.” Susan’s nominations reflected the way she priorities students and her ability to collaborate across campus to make the library accessible to all. A reception and award ceremony to honor Susan will be held on Wednesday, April 26th at 10:00 am in the Library’s Educational Material Center, located on the second floor of the Robert S. Swanson Library & Learning Center. All are invited to attend.

The Barnard Award was established to recognize a library employee who has achieved exceptional accomplishments in serving the informational needs of students, faculty, and staff. Feature Stream: Tiger

"HBO Sports and Jigsaw Productions present an illuminating portrait of global golf icon Tiger Woods, charting his rise, fall, and epic comeback with unprecedented depth and detail. The two-part documentary offers a rare glimpse into Tiger’s unmatched dedication to – and obsession with – the sport, which helped skyrocket him to unparalleled heights as both a golf and cultural icon.

Combining never-before-seen footage with clips from Tiger’s indomitable reign on the professional circuit and revealing interviews with those who know him best, the two-parter also highlights how the ambitious golfer’s pursuit of greatness, coupled with staggering pressure from his father Earl Woods and society-atlarge, contributed to a self-destructive, public spiral before Woods was ultimately able to make a comeback. Unflinching and nuanced, TIGER offers an intimate look at a man who – beyond the fans, sponsors, and outsized expectations – is imperfect and, above all human."

Feature Stream: Daughter of a Lost Bird

"“Lost birds” – a term for Native children adopted out of their tribal communities. Right after the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 became the law of the land, Kendra Mylnechuk Potter was adopted into a white family and raised with no knowledge of her Native parentage. This beautiful and intimate film follows Kendra on her journey to find her birth mother April, also a Native adoptee, and return to her Lummi homelands in Washington State. With a sensitive yet unflinching lens, director Brooke Swaney (Blackfeet/Salish) documents Kendra and April as they connect with relatives and navigate what it means to be Native, and to belong to a tribe from the outside looking in. Along the way, Kendra uncovers generations of emotional and spiritual beauty and pain and comes to the startling realization that she is a living legacy of U. S. assimilationist policy. By sharing a deeply personal experience of inherited cultural trauma, the film opens the door to broader and more complicated conversations about the erasure of Native culture and questions of identity surrounding adoption."
