Route 66 the Photo Exhibit now on display

 

Stop by the library lobby and take a look at "Route 66, the Photo Exhibit" on display now. The series is by UW-Stout alumnus and retired media coordinator John Lauson and feature photos taken on his recent road trip on the historic highway.

The exhibit will be displayed through April 11 and also features Route 66-related library materials to check out.

Gaming and Digital Innovation Lab Grand Opening - March 12

The UW-Stout Gaming and Digital Innovation Lab represents nearly forty years of digital game design history as well as a jumping off point for future research innovations. Featuring a collection of more than eleven major video game consoles, four high-end PCs loaded with productivity software, and access to a digital game catalog of more than 250 titles, the UW-Stout Gaming and Digital Innovation Lab is a space to study, work, teach and play.  This “makerspace” will be a place where people come together to learn and create with technology.  

Please join us for a Grand Opening event on Wednesday, March 12^th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.   A brief talk by Library Director Marlys Brunsting, Collection Development Librarian Cory Mitchell, and School of Art and Design Assistant Professor Andrew Williams will occur at 6:00 pm, followed by an “open play” session in the lab. 

This event is free and open to UW-Stout Students, faculty/staff.  Refreshments will be served.  The Lab is located in Room 106 of the Robert S. Swanson Library and Learning Center (near the first floor Reference Area).

Library Hosting Book Discussion - Marcelo in the Real World

Do you like to read and talk about great books?  Join us for coffee, treats, and a book discussion of Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork on Wednesday, March 26th at 10:00 am.

This book tells the story of Marcelo, a 17-year-old with Asperger's Syndrome.  He has always attended a special school, but the summer after his junior year, his father decides it is time for him to join "the real world," and gets him a job working in the mail room at his father's law firm.  Throughout the summer, Marcelo learns a lot about himself,  friendship, and human nature.

The #StoutReadsYA series is a monthly book discussion open to all in the university community who are interested in reading and young adult literature.  Every month, a new book is read, followed by a casual, hour-long book discussion. Contact the library to reserve a copy of the book.

Nominations being accepted for 2014 Barnard Award

Nominations for the 2014 Barnard Outstanding Service Award for exceptional library staff are being accepted now through March 21.

The Barnard Outstanding Service Award was established by David and Kay Barnard to recognize library staff members who have achieved over and above what is required in their position description and have made outstanding contributions in serving the information needs of students, faculty, and staff.  The Award continues to be supported by the David P. Barnard Family Endowment and the Stout Foundation, Inc.

New Exercise Videos Available for Checkout

If you have been avoiding going to the gym or exercising outside due to the snow, ice, and cold, the University Library has a solution.  Check out our new collection of exercise videos and get your heart pumping in your dorm room or apartment.  Exercise has many physical and mental health benefits, and we have a variety of videos for all interests and abilities, including yoga, Pilates, dance, cardio, and cross-training.  The collection is being displayed on first floor of the library, in the lobby until Spring Break. 

UW System Solid Waste Research student grant opportunities

University of Wisconsin System is accepting applications for solid waste research grants for UW undergraduate and graduate students of any program or major through March 21.

If you have an interest in researching alternatives to solid waste disposal, including the reuse and recycling of materials, composting, source separation and the disposal of household hazardous wastes, this grant is a great opportunity to make an impact through your research.
